We Sorted 33 Game of Thrones Characters Into Hogwarts Houses, Because It Needed to Happen

Have you ever sat down to watch an episode of Game of Thrones and thought, "God, Tyrion Lannister is such a Ravenclaw"? Yep, so have we — which is why we decided to sort all of our favorite characters from the series into their own Hogwarts houses, Harry Potter style. From ambitious Slytherins to loyal Hufflepuffs, Westeros is filled with characters who'd fit in perfectly with specific wizarding groups. As a refresher, here are the houses' most notable qualities:

  • Slytherin: ambition, cunning, pragmatism, resourcefulness
  • Hufflepuff: loyalty, hard work, patience, justice, fairness
  • Ravenclaw: wit, intelligence, cleverness, knowledge
  • Gryffindor: daring, chivalry, bravery, boldness, nerve

Check out where we think these Game of Thrones faces would end up after a session with the Sorting Hat, and let us know if we got it wrong!

01
Tommen Baratheon — Hufflepuff
HBO

Tommen Baratheon — Hufflepuff

Unlike the rest of his family, King Tommen seemingly wants the best for his kingdom. His willingness to trust loved ones often leads to others taking advantage of him, but he tries his best to do what's right. (Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like that's working out for him!)

02
Tyrion Lannister — Ravenclaw
HBO

Tyrion Lannister — Ravenclaw

He is brave at times and awfully ambitious, but Tyrion's Ravenclaw-like logical side always prevails: "My brother has his sword, King Robert has his warhammer, and I have my mind . . . and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone if it is to keep its edge. That's why I read so much, Jon Snow."

03
Grey Worm — Gryffindor
HBO

Grey Worm — Gryffindor

Always the first to volunteer for risky combat, Grey Worm's lifelong Unsullied training prepared him to be brave — for better or worse.

04
Olenna "The Queen of Thorns" Tyrell — Ravenclaw
HBO

Olenna "The Queen of Thorns" Tyrell — Ravenclaw

A fiery tongue and quick wits are Olenna Tyrell's most defining characteristics, and nothing gets past her sharp eye. A combination of knowledge, perceptiveness, and wealth gets her to an extremely influential position, and it's her intellect that keeps her there!

05
Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish — Slytherin
HBO

Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish — Slytherin

Littlefinger is a lot like Severus Snape — a true Slytherin — in that he carries a torch for his unrequited love, plays both sides of a very complicated political war, and is willing to do pretty much anything to accomplish his end goal.

06
Bran Stark — Ravenclaw
HBO

Bran Stark — Ravenclaw

After losing the use of his legs, Bran is entirely reliant on his mind — he even travels beyond the Wall to gain more knowledge.

07
Bronn — Slytherin
HBO

Bronn — Slytherin

He's brave like a Gryffindor, but as a sellsword, Bronn is always looking out for number one — he'd definitely be sorted into Slytherin.

08
Joffrey Baratheon — Slytherin
HBO

Joffrey Baratheon — Slytherin

Nothing stands in the way of Joffrey and what he wants, so he'd definitely end up with the Slytherins.

09
Prince Doran Martell — Ravenclaw
HBO

Prince Doran Martell — Ravenclaw

The Prince of Dorne is famously academic, favoring books and solitude over the drama of the Capitol. However, those who would mistake him as a pushover simply don't understand that he is calculatedly biding his time until the moment is right to act.

10
Catelyn Stark — Gryffindor
HBO

Catelyn Stark — Gryffindor

Gryffindors are sometimes known for an "act first, think later" attitude, and Catelyn Stark definitely falls into that category. Her propensity for quick, bold action — taking Tyrion Lannister prisoner during season one — leads to all-out warfare.

11
Margaery Tyrell — Slytherin
HBO

Margaery Tyrell — Slytherin

Margaery's statement that "I don't want to be a queen, I want to be the queen" on season two has proven true, and she's worked extremely hard to achieve that goal. While she has her grandmother's Ravenclaw-like perception and adaptability, Margaery's commitment to gaining power makes her a Slytherin above all.

12
Daenerys Targaryen — Gryffindor
HBO

Daenerys Targaryen — Gryffindor

Though Daenerys has the ambition of a Slytherin, she isn't willing to achieve her goals by any means. Her bravery in standing up for what's right — abolishing slavery in territories that she wins, most notably — makes her Gryffindor material.

13
Samwell Tarley — Hufflepuff
HBO

Samwell Tarley — Hufflepuff

Though he displays many Ravenclaw traits when it comes to his inclination toward academics, Sam's loyal spirit and strong feelings about what's right place him squarely in Hufflepuff. He's definitely a friend you'd want on your side!

14
Lord Varys — Ravenclaw
HBO

Lord Varys — Ravenclaw

"Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure" certainly appears true for Varys, who uses vast knowledge as his own weapon in the ever-evolving game of thrones.

15
Hodor — Hufflepuff
HBO

Hodor — Hufflepuff

Faithful, tender, and good-hearted, Hodor is a true Hufflepuff.

16
Theon Greyjoy — Slytherin
HBO

Theon Greyjoy — Slytherin

Before he briefly becomes Reek, Theon is so set on pleasing his family and gaining respect that he is willing to double-cross his best friend, kill children, and execute his childhood teachers.

17
Jon Snow — Gryffindor
HBO

Jon Snow — Gryffindor

Jon Snow is a lot like Harry Potter in that he's brave — almost foolhardily so. He is quick to action, struggles with a temper, and will fight for what he thinks is right, just like any Gryffindor would.

18
Ser Davos Seaworth — Hufflepuff
HBO

Ser Davos Seaworth — Hufflepuff

Described as "just, loyal, and unafraid of toil," Hufflepuffs value what's right — something that Davos displays throughout the series, even at the expense of his fingers. (He thinks Stannis's punishment for piracy, cutting off his top digits, is fair in exchange for knighthood.)

19
Arya Stark — Gryffindor
HBO

Arya Stark — Gryffindor

Characteristically hot-headed and bold enough to survive on her own for five seasons, Arya would be a perfect fit in Gryffindor.

20
Brienne of Tarth — Hufflepuff
HBO

Brienne of Tarth — Hufflepuff

Brienne is so loyal that her sword is named "Oathkeeper." It doesn't get more Hufflepuff than traveling across the country to find and protect your dead lady's children!

21
Podrick Payne — Hufflepuff
HBO

Podrick Payne — Hufflepuff

If you look up "loyal" in the dictionary, there's probably a picture of Pod. He lives to serve, obediently tagging along with Brienne — a knight whose cause he believes in.

22
Robb Stark — Gryffindor
HBO

Robb Stark — Gryffindor

Though Robb had never imagined himself as a king, he steps up to rule because he knows he'd be the best fit for his northern lieges. His bold strategy in war (and his personal life) would definitely make him a perfect Gryffindor.

23
Ygritte — Hufflepuff
HBO

Ygritte — Hufflepuff

Though brave Ygritte could easily pass as a Gryffindor, her strong beliefs about right and wrong, as well as her loyalty (to the death) to her fellow Wildlings are total Hufflepuff qualities.

24
Daario Naharis — Hufflepuff
HBO

Daario Naharis — Hufflepuff

Though Daario starts his character arc as a sellsword, he displays extreme loyalty to Daenerys Targaryen during their time together. However, he could just as easily fit in with Gryffindor — he's willing to charge into battle at the drop of a hat.

25
Melisandre — Slytherin
HBO

Melisandre — Slytherin

Though the Red priestess's ambitions are not for her own sake, but for the Lord of Light, she is willing to achieve them by any means — birthing a demon shadow baby to kill a competing king is definitely a Slytherin move.

26
Khal Drogo — Gryffindor
HBO

Khal Drogo — Gryffindor

There's no doubt that this fearless Dothraki would fit in with Gryffindor house — his brave demeanor and unmistakable boldness make him the perfect warrior.

27
Missandei — Ravenclaw
HBO

Missandei — Ravenclaw

It is Missandei's broad knowledge of languages and cultural customs that first draws Daenerys Targaryen to her, and the former slave's sharp mind is a valuable asset no matter where she finds herself.

28
Stannis Baratheon — Ravenclaw
HBO

Stannis Baratheon — Ravenclaw

Anybody who values grammar as much as Stannis Baratheon is bound to be a Ravenclaw — his penchant for the difference between "less" and "fewer" is a dead giveaway.

29
Ramsay Bolton — Slytherin
HBO

Ramsay Bolton — Slytherin

Ramsay is willing to kill literally everything in his path in order to win his father's favor, thus exhibiting the ambitious nature of a Slytherin.

30
Cersei Lannister — Slytherin
HBO

Cersei Lannister — Slytherin

To say Cersei is power-hungry would be putting it lightly; she lets nothing get in the way of her (and her family). She and Lucius Malfoy have a lot in common!

31
Sansa Stark — Ravenclaw
HBO

Sansa Stark — Ravenclaw

Sansa's time as Littlefinger's pawn in the game of thrones has taught her that observation and adaptation are key to survival — her collection of knowledge is her greatest weapon, and an impressive ability to read others has served her well. She would fit right in with other Ravenclaws.

32
Jorah Mormont — Hufflepuff
HBO

Jorah Mormont — Hufflepuff

Though his background is a bit shady, Jorah is so loyal to Daenerys Targaryen that he turns down opportunities to return from his banishment with a full legal pardon in order to protect her . . . even if she doesn't want his help.

33
Sandor "The Hound" Clegane — Slytherin
HBO

Sandor "The Hound" Clegane — Slytherin

Sandor Clegane might, like Harry Potter himself, stump the Sorting Hat between Gryffindor and Slytherin — but since The Hound wouldn't share Harry's fear of being sorted into Slytherin, he would likely end up wearing green and silver.
