Kelly Marie Tran Overheard People Talking About Her Star Wars Character, and This Is What She Did
If you were one of the people who went out to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi this weekend and couldn't stop talking about it with your friends, Kelly Marie Tran probably wants to pull up a chair and join the discussion. In fact, that's exactly what she did just the other day.
Kelly happened to be out eating with a friend when she overheard a group of oblivious fans who'd just seen the movie talking about how much they adore her character, Rose Tico. And that's to be expected, honestly, since the up-and-coming actress's character — a member of the Resistance's support crew who teams up with Finn — is incredibly important. Both Rose and her sister, played by Veronica Ngo, are two of the first Asian American women to be featured in a Star Wars film. That means a lot to people who didn't grow up seeing themselves reflected in the popular sci-fi films.
Kelly herself was so moved by the group's love for Rose that she went over and introduced herself — and even sat down with them for a picture! She posted a video, taken by her friend, of her listening in on their conversation and took the chance to express her appreciation for people who take "genuine interest" in the stories of others. Kelly ended the caption by saying that she was more focused on her purpose than ever: telling stories and having conversations that will expand the understanding of our differences. Read her full description of the sweet fan moment below!
