The AMAs Brought Many a Medley and a Few Trophies, Too

After the ladies and men showed off their red carpet styles, they headed into the Nokia Theater for the American Music Awards last night. The show started off with an exciting medley from Christina followed by a performance from the New Kids on the Block that you guys are split on. Rihanna, Taylor Swift, and the Jonas Brothers represented the industry's young blood while Coldplay, Kanye, Mariah and Alicia Keys with Queen Latifah were also crowd pleasers. Justin Timberlake played special guest while Miley celebrated her Sweet 16 between awards — check out all the winners here. There were so many great performances to choose from but our favorite act of the night goes to Beyonce, who clearly brought Sasha Fierce to the stage.

Rihanna was on hand to light UNICEF's Snowflake in NYC last night before hitting the red carpet in a more dramatic gown alongside Blake Lively and Madonna. The snowflake marks the beginning of holiday shopping season, which we've already gotten a great start on around here with all our fabulous gift guides. Rihanna was also there to officially launch her Tattoo Heart Collection for Gucci, which also benefits UNICEF. The dresses were varied, but Madonna certainly stood out in her unique green LV number, she is the face of the brand after all, on a break from her world tour tonight in Philadelphia. She has a few nights off after that, and according to court records, she will be officially divorced as of tomorrow. As for Rihanna, we'll get to see her strutting her hot stuff on stage this Sunday at the American Music Awards.

Rihanna showed off her big bad blingin' ring as she made her way through LAX yesterday. She's quite a jet setter these days, but that wasn't always the case for the pop star. In a recent interview, Rihanna talks about growing up in Barbados, becoming a celebrity, and why she'll never take anything for granted. Here are highlights:

On being famous enough to make her own decisions: "In the past, I had no say in how I was presented. Those decisions were made for me, right down to the colour of my lipstick. Then I got to a point where I felt confident enough to say, 'This is how I want to look. Take it or leave it.' You could look at it as a form of rebellion. I prefer to look at it as a transition from teenage girl to young woman. I make my own decisions now. When I decide something is going to happen, it happens."
On her home life: "My dad left home when I was nine, so I was really young when I was living with his addictions. I didn’t understand exactly what was going on, but I knew he was doing something he shouldn’t be doing."
On the party scene: "If I go to a club, I go for the sounds. I go out to have fun, to dance and laugh at people fighting or dressed like whores. I might have a few drinks, but I don’t get tipsy too easily. I don’t ever get to the point where I want to throw up, can’t stand up straight or say things I’m likely to regret in the morning."
On appreciating what she has: "I don’t take any of that for granted. I grew up with little or no money. It’s made me appreciate everything so much more."

While Rihanna had a pretty tough childhood, it sounds like she still came out of it with a good head on her shoulders to go along with her big talent.

He also mocked the promise ring wearing Jonas Brothers but Jordin Sparks came to their defense and called Brand a slut. Rihanna looked amazingly badass twice —opening the show with "Disturbia" and later doing a duet with T.I. Other performances included Kanye, Christina Aguilera, Pink, the Jonas Brothers and Kid Rock — all of them full of energy and enjoyable. Also, Demi Moore, Lauren Conrad and Michael Phelps presented awards! So much to talk about, what was your favorite part?
