Both assumed presidential candidates had scenes from their respective personal histories appear this weekend, giving a retrospective peek into the shaping of their contemporary philosophies.

Barack Obama used Father's Day to unleash a sharp criticism on the topic of fatherhood in the African American community, Bill Cosby-style. Obama, recalling being abandoned by his own father at age 2, said, "I resolved many years ago that it was my obligation to break the cycle — that if I could be anything in life, I would be a good father to my girls."

He blasted absentee fathers saying they are "missing from too many lives and too many homes," and that "they have abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men. And the foundations of our families are weaker because of it." He concluded his stern statement saying, "we can't simply write these problems off to past injustices. Those injustices are real. There's a reason our families are in disrepair ... but we can't keep using that as an excuse."

My dad can take credit for many of my Savvy ways. I watched him patiently clip coupons for weekly grocery trips and work long hours without complaining. His actions taught me that money isn't everything but doing the right thing is, and supporting your family and giving the gift of education are good investments. His nonstop days showed me that balancing a full life takes perseverance but you can do anything if you set your mind to it. In honor of Father's Day, I wanted to share a touching tribute from a son to his father. Fellow geek Peter Rojas, cofounder and editor-in-chief of Engadget, lost his father Federico Rojas suddenly before Father's Day last year.

His heartwarming story describes memorable moments when he was growing up, like when his dad would bring home the latest electronics, including an Atari 2600 when Peter was home sick from school after having his tonsils removed.

My father instilled me in his love for technology, but the most important things I learned from him have nothing to do with gadgets. Even though he loved gadgets and electronics, he never made them his life; they were just tools to make life easier or more enjoyable and were never a substitute for the friends, family, and patients that he always put first.

Peter's beautiful and memorable tribute to his father makes me grateful every day to have the amazing father I do. In honor of Frederico, who inspired Peter in all of his endeavors, tell your father today and every day just how much you love him and how much he means to you.

Why My Husband Is a Heck of a Dad

Sure, he lets the kids make messes and doesn't always clean them up, but there are other traits that make my husband a wonderful dad. And, contrary to my children's belief, it is not because he's fed them frozen fruit bars for breakfast on occasion. Here are five of the reasons why my son and daughter are so lucky.

I've never seen him more in awe then when our daughter was born and he announced, "It's a girl!"
I've never seen him more relieved then when our son was born and he shouted, "It's a boy!" knowing he finally had an ally.
He's passed up career advancement to spend time with our kids.
While I was out of town, he took our kids on a trip too. He bought a tent and strung Christmas lights around the living room where they "camped."
When he takes the children to the park or on daily outings, he has more fun than they do and he could care less what the other parents think.

Tell us why your child's dad deserves a fabulous Father's Day!
