The first promos for
American Idol season eight have started to air, and it appears Fox is taking two pretty different tactics when it comes to marketing this season.
One promo features the most recent winner, David Cook, flashing back through his Idol journey, which seems to fit with the network's plan to
make the show more emotional this year. The other features .

As I continue my
Best of 2008 coverage today, I wanted to go straight for one of the heavy hitters: the best new TV show of '08. Thanks to the
writers' strike, this was kind of an odd year for television, but it also launched some pretty good shows. So tell me — what do you think is the best of 2008's freshman TV class?

All of a sudden, it's December and not only are
the holidays right around the corner, we're also getting a slew of new movies, many of which boast major directors (David Fincher, Sam Mendes, Bryan Singer) and heavy-hitting actors (Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, Will Smith, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, etc.).
So, which one are you most looking forward to seeing this month?

I kicked off my
Best of 2008 polls yesterday by asking about
the up-and-coming actors and actresses in film and television. Today let's take a look back at some of the funniest ladies from this year's movies. Who's your favorite?

This season, one of my favorite
Gossip Girl characters has been Dorota, Blair's long-suffering maid and confidant who brings a dose of reality to B.'s hoity-toity life. Apparently I'm not the only Dorota fan, because now,
Dorota will be starring in her own series of webisodes, available exclusively to those of you who use Verizon.
I think Dorota's a great choice for a web series — but is she the best?

It seems like every day, I hear about another movie getting re-released in Blu-ray. The "next-generation," high-definition DVD format promises sharper pictures and brighter colors, and it seems to be really taking off this holiday season. I, though, still don't have a player that can handle Blu-ray discs, so it's all sort of lost on me.

The book publisher Random House recently announced that it will be
releasing thousands more of its books in digital format over the next few months. The idea is that while the market for regular ol' words-on-paper books is struggling, electronic books have grown by leaps and bounds over the past year, thanks to Amazon's Kindle (
Oprah's favorite gadget), among other things.
Still, the overall number of people buying electronic books is still estimated to be pretty small — which got me wondering how you're reading books these days.

TV watching in the US is
now at an all-time high. According to a new Nielsen survey, the average US household has the TV on for eight hours and 18 minutes each day. That's more than a third of the day!

When a book has a large, passionate fan base, adapting it to film can be a tricky task. Certain scenes are usually cut from the book, making it nearly impossible to please everyone.
Twilight has been an interesting case.
