Bill Clinton Says He's Cool With Staying in the Shadows

Bill Clinton, America's 42nd president, says he's ready to stay out of his wife's way as she serves as president 44's secretary of state. Bill told CNN that he would act as Hillary's sounding board, but doesn't think he'll do more than that.

As for helping Obama, Bill said he would if Obama asked him "to do something specific." I could imagine Bill acting as America's on-call peace negotiator, dispatched on specialized missions.

Either way it appears that the former president read Cherie Blair's advice to Michelle Obama: learn to like the backseat. Considering Bill's expertise, accomplishments, and ego, it surely will take some effort to keep quiet. Should he?

For years, Bill and Hillary Clinton have been the portrait of the American political couple — while of course they've always had their detractors and critics — they've stood as powerhouses both on their own and together. Even before her campaign for president ended, however, to some the election season exposed a less than pleasant underbelly of the Clintons. While Bill and Hill supported Barack Obama, at times it seemed like they were intentionally not putting their hearts in the campaign. For instance when Bill stopped by Letterman he complimented McCain and (as Chris Rock pointed out right after) seemingly avoided saying Obama's name.The rationale behind Clinton's tepid support could have had something to do with wanting Hillary to have another chance in 2012, but that might be painting the couple far more sinister than we should. They came under fire again this week when they had to deny having told senators to support Lieberman. While in the end the Clintons did rally for Obama, the lack of full-hearted support turned some fans sour. Now that the election is over, do you think this election season caused a Clinton backlash?Source

What Is the Clinton Global Initiative?

This week heads of state, nonprofit leaders, and philanthropists met for the fourth annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI). By gathering global leaders, the ex-Pres hopes they will devise and implement concrete solutions to some of the world's biggest challenges. Since 2005, CGI has committed $30 billion to programs that have impacted 200 million lives in more than 150 countries.

Some of the highlights from this year have included:

Bono spoke out about global priorities: "It is extraordinary to me that you can find $700 billion to save Wall Street and the entire G-8 can't find $25 billion to save 25,000 children who die every day of preventable disease and hunger."
Wyclef Jean's foundation committed to providing hot school meals for 14,000 poor children, food for 20,000 families a month, thousands of new agriculture jobs, micro-enterprise grants for 165 small businesses, 36,000 farmers with seed, fertilizer, and training, and implementation of a broad communications campaign to engage international and local Haitian musicians in the Together for Haiti Campaign.
Al Gore was joined at the opening session by Clinton, Queen Rania of Jordan, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia, Bono and E. Neville Isdell, chairman of Coca-Cola Co.'s board. Gore called for civil disobedience against new coal plants.
Lance Armstrong, who is planning to race in next year's Tour de France, pledged $8 million to a global awareness campaign for cancer, including a meeting that would convene in Paris after the tour.

Drew Barrymore Takes a Break From Gossip for Clinton

The fourth annual Clinton Global Initiative continued on yesterday with an appearance by Drew Barrymore who cozied up with the former president himself. Drew was there as part of her involvement with the United Nations World Food Programme and despite the other fun we saw her having in NYC this week — making out with Gossip Girl's Ed Westwick — it's clear she's got more on her mind than boys. Now, just wonder if after her big day of doing good and discussing the state of the world at the conference, she celebrated with a night on the town with her younger gentleman friend?

In an ABC News Interview Bill Clinton Asserts: "I'm No Racist" ABC News has an interview with former President Bill Clinton in which he says he's not a racist for the things he said during the Democratic primary race between his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama. That's just how topsy turvy the rise of Obama has made the world for the man once called the "first black president." He now has to protest that he's not a racist. ABC caught up with Clinton in Liberia where he was traveling to take in the good works of his foundation.

The relationship between Clinton and Harlem's African-American community has gone through a distinctly rocky patch this year. Many black residents say they were hurt and angered by what they perceived as racially disrespectful comments made by Clinton during the campaign. One owner of an Internet cafe in Harlem said, "there's a definite level of betrayal, of 'You done us wrong by marginalizing us.'" Clinton said he did not expect the hard feelings to linger, "I don't think it'll last," adding that he was touched that his wife had won 53 percent of the vote in the district.

Lots of lovely ladies were out last night to celebrate at the tenth annual White Tie and Tiara Ball in honor of the Elton John AIDs Foundation at Elton's estate in England. Will and Jada, Liz Hurley (who took the theme quite literally with her sparkly headpiece) and Orlando Bloom joined newly-engaged Uma Thurman for the evening, which raised an impressive $20 million. Mischa Barton was also on hand for the night, as she posed for photos with Kelly Osbourne and her man Luke Worrell. It was certainly a mixed crowd — check out more photos of them coming and going — but it looks like everybody had a blast partying for charity.
