Aw, Ashanti. I've long lamented the lack of risk-taking on the red carpet, and Ashanti is trying something new. Red lips aren't groundbreaking, but pairing them with blue eye shadow.

While the red carpet was sunny and colorful in LA last night, the real fun was reserved for the Shrine Auditorium stage at the BET Awards. Some of the best performances of the night were from our young familiar faces like Chris Brown and Rihanna as well as some old favorites like Alicia Keys alongside En Vogue and TLC (minus Left Eye). How cute was it seeing Chris/Rihanna singing along with each other's performances from the audience.

Believe it or not, Jennifer Hudson didn't pull out her her signature pose at the BET Awards. Instead, she smiled pretty while showing off this angled bob. I like the cut, but it's probably going to look even better when it grows out an inch or two.

No two outfits were alike last night on the red carpet of the BET Awards. There were a variety of colors and lengths that showed off some serious stems and beautiful curves. The men were more laid back in sneakers and polos but there were a few cuties like Chris Brown who stood out from the crowd.

Well, there may not have been any robot suits at this year's BET Awards, but there was plenty of other entertainment, starting with Usher's pyrotechnic performance and continuing through T. Pain's transformation of the awards show into a circus. He told the audience to "ride with the ringleader," since "this industry is my circus."
There were some fierce performances from the female side as well, with Alicia Keys bringing up girl groups of yore, SWV, En Vogue and TLC, for a medley of the groups' hits, which definitely got "Waterfalls" stuck in my head for the foreseeable future.

The lovely Gabrielle is a vision in this white draped Celine dress. The metal neck piece is really cool and her clutch is an added bonus. Her hair is even futuristic and flirtatious — well done.

I gotta give props to Alicia for staying on top of the trends. She hit all the right notes stepping out on the red carpet in a fuchsia strapless dress by David Meister at the BET Awards. I love the origami pleating and those Sergio Rossi paint splattered shoes are hot!

Leave it to sassy Rihanna to stand out from the crowd by dressing like a raver princess. I love the nightgown-like feel her neon Giambattista Valli yellow ruffle maxi dress has. Seeing as neon is the trend of the moment, Rihanna has done right.

The 2008 BET Awards have arrived. And with it, red carpet eye candy. First up is Jennifer Hudson, who opted for a strapless, bronze Peter Soronen dress that hugs her every curve.
