Ariana Grande Protests Abortion Laws by Donating Her Concert Proceeds to Planned Parenthood

Ariana Grande is the latest to join the wave of celebrities using their platforms to speak out against a handful of troubling policies. The "7 Rings" singer donated the proceeds from her Atlanta tour stop to Planned Parenthood on June 8, in response to several restrictive antiabortion laws that have been popping up around the country since late April. According to People, Ariana's contribution to the organization — which provides affordable reproductive health care and sex education to millions of women nationwide — was totaled at $250,000.

"Ariana Grande's generous donation comes at a critical time — in Georgia and across the country, anti-women's health politicians are trying to ban all safe, legal abortion," President of Planned Parenthood's Action Fund Dr. Leana Wen said in a statement. "This is not what the American people want, nor is it something they'll stand for . . . Thanks to inspiring support like hers, Planned Parenthood can continue to fight back — in the courts, in Congress, in state houses, and in the streets — against these dangerous attacks on people's health and lives. We are so grateful to Ariana for her longstanding commitment to supporting women's rights and standing with Planned Parenthood to defend access to reproductive health care. We won't stop fighting — no matter what."

In May, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a bill banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. The six-week mark is usually when doctors can detect a fetal heartbeat, though it's also before many women even realize they're pregnant, which is why the law has been criticized so heavily. Ariana's donation follows that of Travis Scott, who also donated the proceeds from his performance at Alabama's Hangout Music Festival to Planned Parenthood last month.
