Ezra Miller and Comics Author Grant Morrison Join Forces to Script Upcoming Flash Movie

While Justice League was mostly a flop (due in part to Superman's weirdly CGI'd face), there was one thing that many fans and nonfans alike could agree on: Ezra Miller is simply delightful as the slightly awkward but nonetheless endearing Barry Allen aka the Flash. Whether it was good writing, Miller's supreme comic timing, or a mixture of both, it's hard to watch the film without feeling at least a little bit charmed by the character. That's why you might be pleased to know a standalone film starring the Flash is, indeed, in the works. The bad news is that it's a ways off. The goods news is we have a bunch of exciting details to satiate your hunger.

Instead of naming the film after the hero (like Wonder Woman and Aquaman, no shade), this project is actually called Flashpoint. It's based on a comic book of the same name that totally changed the DC extended universe as we know it, if you ask Entertainment Weekly.

So, what's so crazy about the Flashpoint story that the film is based on? Well, basically, the Flash wakes up in a sort of alternate universe. He doesn't have superspeed any more. His dead mother is suddenly alive. And all of the "heroes" he's come to know are just a bit . . . well, different. It's up to the Flash to figure out what the hell is going on.

Interestingly, this comic has already been adapted to screen twice. In 2013, it was made into an animated film titled Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. It's also been hashed out on The CW's iteration of The Flash. According to EW, though, this big-screen adaptation will tread new ground.

Naturally, Ezra Miller will play the title character. This is pretty exceptional news; it means Miller will be the first openly queer actor to lead a superhero film. In September 2017, Deadline confirmed that Gal Gadot would appear as Wonder Woman as well. As for Ben Affleck's Batman, Jason Momoa's Aquaman, Henry Cavill's Superman, or Ray Fisher's Cyborg, we don't have any official word.

Variety reports that Ben Affleck was approached to direct the film, but he turned the opportunity down. Instead, Warner Bros. has tapped John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, best known for 2015's Vacation and 2018's Game Night.

Warner Bros. has hired Miller and famous comic book author Grant Morrison to draft a script. The decision comes after Miller — who wants to tell a darker tale of Barry Allen — had creative differences with Daley and Goldstein's lighthearted version of the script. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this change could determine whether the actor will remain on board as the Scarlet Speedster. (PLEASE stay, Miller!!!)

No official date has been set for the film's release, but we do have a vague idea of the production schedule, thanks to a report from Variety. Because the script was quite literally flipped and production hasn't even started, we're looking at a 2021 release. Sad!
