"Top Gun: Maverick" Will Be Available to Stream in December

Exhilarating, nostalgic, and action-packed, "Top Gun: Maverick" had viewers of all ages glued to the screen taking another journey with Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise). The "Top Gun" sequel hit theaters on May 27, nearly 36 years after its original release back in 1986. Less than a week after its theatrical release, "Top Gun: Maverick" had garnered widespread critical acclaim. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film grossed $160.5 million just over Memorial Day weekend, making it the biggest film opening of all time for the specific holiday weekend.

Nearly three decades have passed since US Navy pilot Maverick joined the TOPGUN flight school and wowed his peers with his impressive, yet arguably dangerous, flight practices. After being ordered by former rival turned friend Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky (Val Kilmer) to go back to TOPGUN, Maverick has to train a group of young, experienced pilots to carry out a risky assignment that has the potential to damage the Pentagon. During this time, Maverick relives difficult moments of his past as he trains Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his old friend Goose, who died in a flight accident 30 years prior. Through this experience, Maverick must come to accept his past and prove his abilities to the new group of pilots, all while rekindling a past romance.

On Nov. 22, it was announced via TVLine that "Top Gun: Maverick" will hit Paramount+ on Dec. 22.

Typically, in post-COVID Hollywood, the typical exclusivity window for theater runs is approximately 45 days before a movie hits streamers, but "Top Gun: Maverick" got an extended theater run of seven months.
