"The Mandalorian"'s Katee Sackhoff Explains Why Bo-Katan Kept the Mythosaur a Secret

At the end of the second episode of the third season of "The Mandalorian," Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) makes it to the living waters in the mines of Mandalore with the help of Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda). He's intent on bathing there to atone for his transgression: taking off his mask, an absolute no-no under The Way that he follows.

He's obviously happy to have made it there, but when he begins the ritual that would cleanse him, he's sucked under the water. Bo-Katan dives in after him, finds him at the bottom of the water, and carries him to the surface. But not before seeing what attacked him — the Mythosaur. The Mythosaur is a legendary beast with ties to the very existence to Mandalorians, and it looks like it means big, big changes are coming for all Mandalorians — and for Din. Ahead, we're breaking down what a Mythosaur is, why Bo-Katan didn't tell Din about it right away, and what it means for "The Mandalorian" season three.

Back during "The Book of Boba Fett," Mando talked to the Armorer (Emily Swallow) about the Darksaber, the current state of Mandalore, and the Mythosaur. She tells him, "Songs of ages past foretold of the Mythosaur rising up to herald a new age of Mandalore. Sadly, it only exists in legends."

Bo-Katan also gives more context right before Mando steps into the living waters. She reads a plaque that says, "These mines date back to the age of the first Mandalore. According to ancient folklore, the mines were once a Mythosaur lair. Mandalore the Great is said to have tamed the mythical beast. It is from these legends that the skull signet was adopted and became the symbol of our planet."

When Bo-Katan sees the Mythosaur in the waters, alive, she's shocked. It seems that Mando was passed out and did not see it.

As Bo-Katan reminds Mando during the episode, Mandalore was crushed by the Empire in what became known as the Great Purge of Mandalore (and Moff Gideon was a key player in the planet's demise). Taking the Armorer's prophecy and Bo-Katan's plaque together, it seems the person who will lead Mandalore is on the way, and the planet could begin to return to some of its former glory, bringing peace to the Mandalorians.

Of course the question is who is that person. Mando has the Darksaber — which is traditionally associated with the leader, but he doesn't seem the "leading a planet" type. Bo-Katan has wanted to be that leader in the past, but she's said in season three she isn't interested anymore. Perhaps seeing the Mythosaur changes her mind. There are also other Mandalorians around, like Paz Vizsla and Axe Woves (Simon Kassianides) who could look to become the leader as well.

And there's a Mandalorian wild card: Grogu, who chose to join Din's clan rather than become a Jedi. Is Grogu fated to lead all Mandalorians out of darkness into a new world?

Speaking to POPSUGAR, Sackhoff explains why she thinks Bo-Katan didn't tell Din about the Mythosaur in episode three — and it's not because she has bad intentions. "The thing that she thought was a metaphor, [that's] the symbol of her people, all of a sudden she thinks she saw [it]," she says. "She doesn't know what she saw." Bo-Katan's not sure if it was just her mind playing tricks on her. "I just think that she's just trying to figure out what it is that she thinks she saw, and if she's going to sound crazy," she says.

Viewers will have to wait and see what the repercussions of the sighting are.
