After a 13-year wait for the "Avatar" sequel, a teaser trailer for the film has finally arrived. On May 9, 20th Century Studios unveiled the first glimpse of "Avatar: The Way of Water," which is set a decade after the events of James Cameron's first blockbuster in the franchise. The second "Avatar" movie — the first of four sequels — will tell the story of the Sully family (Jake Sully, Neytiri, and their kids) and the challenges they endure together as they fight to stay alive.

As seen in the trailer, "Avatar: The Way of Water" picks up with Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) protecting their family on planet Pandora as they encounter new threats to its growing civilization. "I know one thing: wherever we go, this family is our fortress," Sully says.

Many of the original "Avatar" stars will reprise their roles in "Avatar: The Way of Water," including Saldana, Worthington, and Sigourney Weaver. "Everything Everywhere All at Once" star Michelle Yeoh, Kate Winslet, and Oona Chaplin are among the new faces joining the film's cast. The movie, which has been pushed back several times, is scheduled to premiere in theaters on Dec. 16. Watch the "Avatar: The Way of Water" trailer above.
