Gwyneth Paltrow Lost in Translation

Gwyneth may split her time in London and the states since she married Chris Martin, but she still remembers where she comes from. Once again Gwyneth is on the defense for being misunderstood. She recently has come under fire for supposedly telling a Portuguese newspaper that, "The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans." And evidently she is "deeply" upset because she said that her comments were lost in translation. She's now determined to set the record straight. People reports:

"I felt so upset to be completely misconstrued and I never, ever would have said that," says the 34-year-old Oscar winner. "I definitely did not say that I think the British are more intelligent and civilized than Americans. I am a New York girl, that's how I always think of myself and see myself."

As for where the quotes came from, Paltrow says she did not give an interview to the Portuguese daily newspaper, though she did give a press conference – in Spanish – for an endorsement she did in Spain.

"This is what I said. I said that Europe is a much older culture and there's a difference. I always say in America, people live to work and in Europe, people work to live. There are positives in both," says the actress, adding, "Obviously I need to go back to seventh-grade Spanish!"

She also said she was proud to be an American. Gwyneth keeps getting herself into these types of messes. Perhaps it's time to get a translator!

She would love everyone to believe she is so wonderful and miss perfect but she is SO not. She makes me vomit in my own mouth.

i love gwyneth, whether or not this is true.

this is how i see this though:
i talk trash about my family ALL THE TIME. they drive me absolutely nuts, BUT i love them more than anything. if we can equate family to country, gwyn-haters can't stone her. if you can't talk trash about your own in public, who can you trash?

example of christmas with friend's family: i love your family. they're so sane. everyone just stews in old grudges at my family events, which ultimately culminates in overeating and overdrinking. can you please adopt me?

ummm, I really don't think you can compare family to country. I know every member of my family personally. She's generalizing an entire country of people, and she's lived a sheltered, privileged existence. How many average Americans has she actually come in contact with? She's a fantastic actress (i'll give her that), but she's not famous for her superior intellect...she's just an actress.

i've made generalizations about americans when i've seen them in other countries. it's certainly not all americans or even all the american tourists in said country. they trash the people or the country they're in speaking english as if they are the only english speaking people, they dress like they're in america and they speak VERY loudly. it's odd that other american tourists and i bemoan this, attributing it to the belief by americans that no one else matters/exists. well, those making these sweeping assumptions are americans. why don't we attribute it to the individuals?

i asked this question and the lady i was speaking to said it was because midwestern people weren't cultured. what kind of assessment is that? now it's not that they're american, but that they're midwestern? people attribute certain qualities superficially because it's easy.

everyone is so over sensitive about america, why can't you say anything bad about it? what if she does think england is better than america? she can if she wants, and its nice that she's open minded to other cultures, and not just a blind patriot. anyway, i'm sure she did just speak crap spanish.

Well what can I say, the girl nows when to say the truth. I mean, what she said is not far from the truth! and what is the big deal about it, i say, Gwen, you go girl, but dont excuse yourself with the whole translation thing, hey you have been living and vacationing in Spain for quite some time so come on, if you feel that way there is no need to feel bad and go back on your words.
You will always get the Truth from me!

I hate to say I told you so...According to the NY Daily News, the actress, who just finished directing a short film called Dealbreakers, flipped out when she spotted a box full of Cup-A-Soup on the set. "Who eats this stuff?" she demanded. When a crew member admitted that his kids were actually really into the additive-laden snack, Ms. Paltrow-Martin said – and you can wait for it, because it's totally worth it – "I would rather die than let my kid eat Cup-A-Soup."
I thought Gwenzila was a nice American, until she opened her mouth.

Even if it was true that she said this it wouldn't bother me. Everyone is entitled to their opinion esp if they have lived in both countries. Sometimes the blank over zealous patriotic stance SOME Americans take reminds me of the blank overly zealous stance terrorists take.. equally scary. Now watch my guestbook fill with hate mail. Smiling

LOL Ima, actually I totally agree with you. She's entitled to believe what she believes. I wish she wouldn't always backtrack on it, but whatever. Americans don't seem to mind other people saying ridiculously prejudiced things about them. Why get all up in arms when another American jumps on the bandwagon? Consistency would be nice.

Ima, I agree. I watch this from the outside, but it seems, Americans treat celebrities (or whoever?) that speak about things they don't like about the States, like traitors. Its kind of scary, considering one of the great things about America is supposed to be free speech.

I can't stand her and her monotone drab voice. It matches her plain personality. She is a snob. She is an elitist who has never really had to work hard for anything in her life. She does even know what is like to be a real American and work for a living to provide for her family. She needs to get her nose out of the air and start seeing things for what they really are.
England can have, we don't want her back. Both her and Madonna. Yuck!

She messed up, but, what most people don't know is that trash talking America is like a national sport in most other countries (second only to soccer). Everywhere I go, people are like "are you american?" as I wait in line at a restaurant/call a cab/go to a bar and then proceed to read me the riot act on why we are ALL so awful. So when an American goes and disses their own overseas, it's like gas on the fire.

she is lying now. she speaks fluent spanish, having spent a time in spain as an exchange student, and she has spoken fluent spanish on a few interview shows on tv.

plus, why would a press conference for a portugese newspaper be in spanish and not portugese or english?

her story doesn't make much sense.

hahahhahaha, maybe she has a love/hate relationship with america-- weirder things have happened. She is entitled to her opinion, I could give two sh*ts about it.... but the comment, "midwesterners are not cultured"? I DO take offense to that, since when is chicago a non-cultured city!? I am no midwestern-farmers daughter. Eye-wink

She said the same bad stuff about America to other magazines in other countries. She is lying now and that is just sad. I hope the other countries she's slamming America to are printing what she is saying to PEOPLE. It would be awesome if they called her out on her lie. I haven't liked her since the last time she trashed americans.

well it is true there is more culture in Europe, America is the "new world" , so naturally we have less history and culture. To be honest, Gwynnie's remarks started AFTER G.W. came in office, and I too am ebarrassed by this regime. Call me unpatriotic if you want, I LOVE AMERICA, but I do not like who is running the joint and I certainly can see how other countries think we idiots. We have an idiot running the country, and WE(not) elected him. America has been built on materialistic values. Sorry if I have offended anyone.

She's going to pay for those remarks in ticket sales. She's already not well liked by many. Now it will be even worse. She'll be doing lifetime movies in a few year anyways. And when her husbunds group can't sell any more records I wonder if she'll dump him because he's not successful anymore. I think she is that shallow. She only cares about the limelight and how she looks in the public.

I hope she saved her money because it better keep them warm through the cold front coming. Lord nows she wasn't made a hit movie in a while. She only does Artsy crap these days like Wes Anderson pictures.

She's so vanilla and plain. Yuck!

well as for this i just would like to say for gwyneth to remember to not bite the hand that feeds her. as an American who has traveled and lived abroad , we hear enough criticism as it is..i love the idea of free speech but honey, you chose to be celebrity which comes with some drawbacks.. oh YES everyone will know what you SAID.. keep this to yourself and take the time for more important ventures.. such as "creative" baby names.. perhaps.."lemon or grapefruit" might be a new addition to the family..

so when can we expect to hear the "fake" British accent?.. "cough, cough...Madonna...cough"
