Kelly Clarkson is Miss Independent

Kelly continues to speak out against her handlers in the July issue of Elle Magazine. As you know, her label and Clive Davis especially were dead set against Kelly writing the songs on her upcoming album, My December. But she stuck to her guns and did things her way. Kelly is obviously taking things into her own hands and so far she seems to be doing a pretty good job. Here's more about what she's having to put up with:

  • "I am a good singer, so I can't possibly be a good writer," she says, bristling at the implication. "Women can't possibly be good at two things. I haven't lost my temper about it. It only drives me more. If your thing is to bring me down, cool. I'll just work harder."
  • "Kelly can sing the phone book," Cowell says. "She doesn't have to be told what to do."

"She was incredible. When you let her come back on the show it makes everybody else look like an amateur," says Cowell, who believes Clarkson is the best winner yet "without question."

  • "My label wanted me to sing 'Never Again [at Idol Gives Back],'" she says. "And I was like, To promote yourself on a charity event is beyond crass. People are starving and dying and I'm up there singing some bitter pop song? And believe me, everyone wanted me to sing it. Because they are jaded and they have no soul. Imagine sitting in a room full of people totally against you. Can't they hear themselves speaking? Capitalize on AIDS? Are you kidding? Insulting an entire nation of people? I just refused."

Instead, she sang Griffin's "Up to the Mountain," a folkie spiritual that left many listeners in tears. Clarkson asked the British guitar legend Jeff Beck to accompany her, and she showed not only stylistic growth, but a fresh confidence.

We always said she was a big huge star and biggest AI winner! It's great to see how much Simon still supports her during this crazy time and it will be very interesting to see how many number one hits her album produces this time around.

I really like her, and I don't watch AI and never have. I think she's a great singer and I like that she has succumbed to the beauty pressures. And I love her single Never Again. I am always seeing on Perez's site that it sucks and everyone hates it, but I hear it on the radio and it's been in the top on ITunes and AOL.

I really like Kelly Clarkson. I love her music but that one quote I really don't like. She says women can't be good at two things. I understand the context of how she said it but that is sort of giving up. Women and men can be good at many things. It all takes hard work.

I think Kelly Clarkson is one kick-ass girl. I am so proud of her for following her heart and sticking to her guns. Hopefully, this album will be a huge success and her fans will support her greatly so that the Billboard charts will reflect her success.

I also watched the AI finale (hello, LOVE AI! Smiling) and I also love Patty Griffin... so when Kelly sang it, I was definitely emotional. It was beautiful. GO KELLY!!

I have always supported Kelly Clarkson. Her voice is fantastic and I think she's a strong female role model. She comes off as incredibly genuine. Good for her for not compromising!

I think she just meant that she feels like people don't think women can be good at two things, not that that is true. I think her point is that's bs, but people act like women can't be multi talented and it upsets her and that's why she fought for freedom on this album.

I have said since she first won AI that I have never seen anyone deserve fame and fortune like she does. She is far and away a young woman of character that could give even Oprah lessons in humility, modesty, character, and depth....
ok, not Oprah, but you get my drift.

jmmst49, dear, I think she was mocking people that believe that. Re-read her comment... I'm pretty sure she was being facetious, making her point that she's a good singer and is attempting to prove those wrong who think she can't sing and write.

    WTF!
"Women can't possibly be good at two things."

    Are you kidding me?!

I hope she regrets that statement as she matures.

thank you, katiefrog! I seriously kept re-reading that quote and was like I really don't understand what she is saying. I think I kept skipping over the word bristling which made the WHOLE thing make sense!

I've loved Kelly since I first saw her trying out for AI! Her voice is incredible and her attitude kicks butt!! She is definitely someone who deserves all the fame and fortune she has encountered! As for her quote I think she was being very sarcastic about the whole thing as well, haha! Like by saying women can't possibly do two things at the same time....yeah right! She knows we can and that's why she didn't give in and it drove her more to be successful! Go Kelly!

I think she's fantastic, that's the only season of American Idol I watched. About the comment, I really think some people should re-read that quote because you obviously misunderstood it.

"she says, bristling at the implication"

bris·tling - To react in an angry or offended manner

Go Kelly! Stick to your guns, you've already proved yourself, no need to succumb to them now, Pink did the same this with MissUndaztood and look how successful that turned out to be!

Love her! She is such a breath of fresh air compared to most celebrities. I most definently disagree with her "Women can't possibly be good at two things" statement though, so untrue!

Am I the only one that caught that she was being sarcastic about women can't be good at two things? She was saying, that's what THEY think and she doesn't get mad about it it just drives her to prove them wrong...am I the only one seeing that?

That quote definitely didn't come across the way she meant it, I believe! To me, it sounds like a very sarcastic statement, like I believe someone said above, she's mocking their idea that a woman couldn't possibly do two things like sing And write. Good for her for standing her ground.

jmmst49, you're welcome! I am sure some people will take just the quote "women can't be good at two things" and use it out of context to make her look bad though, even though if you read the whole paragraph you see what she's saying. It probably wasn't the wisest way to word it because obviously a lot of people misunderstood it when they read it.

I'm not the biggest fan of her new single, but I'll still be lining up to buy the CD. She is awesome and I love that she's not afraid to speak her mind--but she does it in a non-obnoxious way that so few people can pull off.

i'm not that into "pop"-py music, but i really love kelly! i love that she didn't starve herself to become the hollywood ideal (I never watched AI and I did hear she lost weight after that) and that she wants to be control of her own career. It's so refreshing to hear that she standing up to the "man" (with the self-promotion thing on AI).
and she was TOTALLY being sarcastic with that women not being able to do two things! they wanted to add two "sure-fire hits" to her last album but she decided to keep the songs she wrote on the album instead. on another web site, it explicity says she was being sarcastic with that statement. yay, kelly! i ♥ you!

Kelly rox! She has a great voice... An seems so genuine Smiling

I think most of you are misunderstanding her quote "Women can't possibly be good at two things." ... She is obviously sarcastically addressing the fact that her management thought this statement was true... Her management believed that women can't be good at more than 1 thing... Which is exactly why it was so important for her to fight so hard to write her own stuff for this album... To prove everyone, who doubted her, wrong Smiling
