Julia Builds Eco-Friendly Digs for her Growing Family

Julia and Danny were looking perfectly eco-friendly this weekend in Malibu with him filling up the Prius and her holding a bunch of wildflowers. Yet, that's only the beginning! The family is in the process of building a completely enviro-friendly home in Malibu, just in time for their new baby. The $20 million house will be solar-powered, built with wood from sustainably managed forests; even the bathrooms will have recycled tiles. Julia has been environmentally conscious since Erin Brockovich, but she recently told Life & Style that little Phinneus and Hazel have made her care even more. Here are highlights:

  • "Motherhood is the big reason I started thinking more critically about the environment and global warming."
  • Once she's done with the house, Julia plans to turn her focus to fuel. "I have a hybrid car, but I want something that runs on vegetable oil," she says, "I think it's a small price to pay to smell like a french fry!"

While the environment certainly needs help from everyone, it's great to have such caring super stars like Julia doing her part to make the world a cleaner place.

it must be nice to be rich and be able to do all that enviro-friendly stuff. me, i can't even afford organic foods.

too bad our gov't can't somehow be on the bandwagon to make it the norm for EVERY person, regardless of wealth.

Julia is one of my favorites. Love her family too. She seems to have a great husband, very much in love. Not a high profile marriage. She knows what she wants and how to get it.

I just love how comfortable she seems in her life. She's not doing any of it for show, which I appreciate.

Good for her! I love that she is setting a good example for others with her eco-friendly home. I hope she gets more press about it to inspire others.
I would like to get some solar panels put in on my house but I did some research and they are soooo expensive, even with all the tax cuts/rebates you get for doing it. But I would LOVE to stick it to PepCo (local utility)

Hey babsee, I feel the same sometimes. There are a lot of little things that we can do to save energy, that also saves us money, though....

-turning off any lights that aren't needed (ie, making the best use of daylight that you can, turning off lights in any room you're not in)
-deciding what you want from the 'fridge before you open it, then grabbing it quickly and closing it.

-dusting off light bulbs (you may need fewer lights on when the bulbs are clean)

-switching to low-energy florescent lights when possible

-riding a bike or walking instead of taking a 2 minute drive

-shopping at local farmer's markets and eating seasonal food (ie, apples in the fall, peaches in the summer, etc) so a ton of fossil fuels aren't used to get your produce to you (local produce is usually cheaper, too)

-turning down the thermostat a few degrees in the winter

-using a ceiling fan instead of an air conditioner, as the latter use a heck of a lot more energy.

etc, etc, etc. I'm a dorky tree-hugger, but a frugal (ie, broke and cheap by necessity) one.

there are lots of things that you can do without spending tons of money i.e buying fruits and veggies from a farmers market or local growers, reusing paper bags at the grocery store or buying your own bag to carry them in, lower wattage light bulbs, riding your bike instead of using your car, even if its a couple times a week, it will still help and of course recycle, recycle, recycle. it doesnt take money, just paying a little bit more attention

I think one of the ways that we can help the planet and this global warming is if we stop paying these celebrities MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars (Come on, now!) and start focusing all that money on what we can do to save our planet. I mean honestly, when our planet is going to go down the sh*thole in a couple million years, who's gonna be watching movies anyway?

I think it would be totally cool if all of these celebs who are serious about global warming get together and spend their money on campaigning on this issue. Leo, Cameron, Julia, Brad, Drew and the rest should do something big together!

Apparently Danny's stretching out because he's decided it would be even more eco friendly to just run everywhere.

I really can't stand Julia Roberts. Even though I love Pretty Woman.

I guess this is better than spending $20 million on non-eco-friendly house, but it's clearly not an attainable goal for most budgets.

ditto. I still think that there are things you are able to do around the house as stated above that would help rather than a 20 million house. It's just one house. ONE.
