Send Condoms to Republicans, Give Money to Democrats

Planned Parenthood must think that the conventions are just big orgies. They're asking supporters to send condoms to the Republican National Convention along with money, of course, that will go to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and Barack Obama's campaign.

Ten dollars will send one condom, $35 sends four, you get the picture. The Democrats will get the money, and they're hoping the Republicans will get the message.

OK, so the condoms aren't meant to be used (but they can . . . even for the most conventional sex), they're meant to serve as a reminder that prevention is a nonpartisan issue. Even if Planned Parenthood relays the message in its usual partisan tone, saying:

They don't get that young people need comprehensive, accurate sex education. They don't get that they don't belong in the exam room letting their politics get in the middle of a woman and her doctor. And they don't get that preventing sexually transmitted diseases starts with one simple item: a condom.

Do you think Republicans will get Planned Parenthood's message? Or are the bright-pink wrappers distracting and the message, um, plastic?

Planned Parenthood isn't the only safe-sex group cropping up at the conventions. To see who we saw last week, read more.

Trojan condoms had a tent supporting their "get it on agenda" and handed out condoms in favor of "evolving." The tent let you test your Sex IQ. Let's say there were lots of folks taking the free rubbers — all in the name of good legislation, I'm sure.

I think they are losing their "bipartisan" message by donating the money to Obama. Why not donate to send condoms to underprivileged areas or even to schools? The message is lost.

I'm picturing Convention goers filling the condoms with helium, inhaling, and en mass, singing Berry White songs. Is this wrong?

Since when is Planned Parenthood supposed to be bipartisan? (Or, non-partisan?) I thought they always endorse and supported candidates.

By the way, the idea of sex education in schools is weird. I mean, is this curriculum included when you study for your teaching credential? The government is teaching us about sex? Shouldn't it be a private, family matter? Or families that don't want to deal with it can send their kids to a privately taught class, like an SAT prep course or Art Camp, to learn.

Citizen, Liberty, you were there. Was the convention just one big orgy? Eye-wink

Yeah, I think that Planned Parenthood would LOVE to be bipartisan, however, I just don't think it's happening right now. I mean, despite is pro-life stance, McCain voted down a bill that would have provided support for educating teens about preventing unwanted pregnancy and STD's (Obama voted for it). Honestly, the Republican party is just a little too "family values" right now to worry about preventing pregnancy and STD's. My family (Republican) has tried to explain it to me as a form of slut-shaming. Like, if teens choose to have sex before marriage, they need to suffer the consequences, or they will learn that bad behavior can be awarded. So, an unwanted baby or std is like a punishment. Of course it's more of a punishment for the woman (the slut) if there is a pregnancy, which I guess is kind of how they think it should be. Since they also don't think the state should be able to compel men to pay child support for a choice that the woman made. Anyway, this is how my family explains it.

So yeah, many in the GOP aren't really fans of Planned Parenthood. Oh yeah, and then PP is basically an "abortion factory," so why bother working with them anyway?

I like these condoms, this is a very cute fundraising idea!

Oh my gosh, I want those condoms! I love elephants.

And I totally think that their wrapping is distracting, I hardly even read the article, other than to find out that I can't purchase these for my own. Sad

I think that they should send the money back to sex education programs in schools (like GS said)...kind of interesting they are promoting a candidate. I mean yes, they are pro-choice and all but still- I would think that they would rather the message be more about promoting sex ed than endorsing a candidate.

GS- this is a record- we agree on something haha. Sticking out tongue

The last thing we need in this world is Republicans making little Republicans.

I thought it was funny that the condom wrapper says "unintended" instead of "unwanted" pregnancies.

Makes sense that PP would want to help put Sen. Obama in the White House. Democrats funnel a lot of money their way, something like $300 million per year. That revenue would likely increase with Democrats in control of the executive and legislative branches. Follow those dollars.

LOL -- at first I thought they were insulting McCain's VP pick (telling her to practice save sex and stop having so many kids that you won't be around to take care of should you secure the office) -- And I was like WOW -- that's bold of them to say -- So yeah the message is pretty lost and yeah they should give the money to Planned Parenthood.

But I guess what they are say is send a message to the GOP but give the money to help Obama secure the office - because we don't want an extreme Pro-Lifer in office. I think that's what they are trying to say but the message is lost.

Call the pollution police, because I doubt many will be using these condoms meant to insult. These will just end up as extra trash... way to go, Planned Parenthood.
BTW, sex-after-marriage is not a Republican value. I'd bet not very many Republicans wait until marriage themselves. However you feel about Republican's ACTUAL views on sex, let's not spin the truth.
