Justin Doesn't Care What You Think (And He's Not Sorry)

Justin managed to get away from his FutureSex/LoveTour long enough to do a photoshoot and interview for the April cover of Details Magazine. He looks dapper, as usual, in the pics, but inside the article it's clear that some of the pressures are starting to get to him. A far cry from the doe eyed boyband star, Justin voices his frustration about the Grammys, the media, and the pressures of being a pop idol. Here are highlights:

  • On the tabloids: "I despise what they do. They create soap operas out of people's lives. [Britney and I] had our thing, and it's over. They edit that stuff like MTV edits reality shows. It's a spin game, and I choose not to take part in it."
  • On being considered the New King of Pop: "I tried so hard to be an R&B artist [with first solo album Justified] and it was the pop album of the year, and I was like, 'Fuck. That's the last thing I wanted but I was like, 'So everyone considers me a pop artist? Well, fuck it. I'm going to do whatever I want to do."
  • On surviving the boy-band apocalypse and becoming a man: "I could give you a bunch of analogies about why I'm still around that would sound like hippie self-help bullshit. 'I saw an opportunity and I took it?' Fuck you. Sure, there's a lot of luck involved. But on some level I have to believe in my ability. And I'm not apologizing to anyone. I worked fucking hard to get here."
  • On being used by the Grammys for ratings: "I'm the nice guy who follows through on the things he commits to. But I don't know if I'll be going through that sort of thing again. I feel like the Grammys used me for ratings. And look at it-they were up 18 percent."
  • Usually we've got nothing but love for JT, but he sure does sound a bit cocky (not to mention crabby) here. He clearly works hard and his talents are more than worthy of the attention he gets, but where's the sweet Southern boy who takes his mom to awards shows? And ripping on the Grammys? Careful Justin - don't bite the hand that feeds you!

Is it weird that the only time I find him attractive is when he's singing? The rest of the time he does nothing for me.

No wonder I've never liked him or his music. He is such a conceited, whiny cry-baby. He's always complaining that people label him as a popstar, well duh! His music can't be labeled anything else and let's not forget he started in a boy band for heaven's sake, how more pop can you be? Didn't he get to choose his songs since the beginning? He could have chosen R&B if he wanted...what he sings is not in the least that type of music. He has so much yet he still b*tches. I hate complainers.

I suppose he comes off as cocky, but I'd like to think of it as self-assured and confident. He can back up everything he says with talent too. I still love him.

Yes Justin Timberlake IS arrogant! That's not exactly a newsflash.

He's always been cocky, even back when he was in N Sync he had an arrogant streak.
Most of his detractors despise him for this very reason while his fans love him in spite of his inflated ego.

Personally I think his arrogance is mild when compared to the that of Kanye West or even Usher (and I'm a fan of both men).

well at least he has the talent to back up his arrogance. i really like him and his music but i wish he would simmer down a bit in publications with the "F" bomb. i don't know what he is trying to prove talking like that. ummm, yeah Justin we realize you are a grown man now.

Justin has a reputation for being completely full of himself, very arrogant.

He sounds like a complete fool in that interview. His arrogance comes through loud and clear. Not a good thing. He doesn't need to have an attitude and bang home the point about all his hard work. It's obvious he worked hard to get where he is. But he considers himself R&B? That's laughable. Of course he is a Pop Star. duh. It's like he isn't even in touch with his own industry. What he does is 100% Pop. That's his category. But what is good is that his category crosses over to every other genre. And so can he.

    What a crybaby.

I've never liked him. He comes off as a pompous jerk who feigns humility when it serves him. He's totally the reason why Cameron Diaz was so bitter in life and the paparazzi when they were together. He's still a jerk and she is reborn.

He never fooled me- I always thought he had a terrible attitude. I also think he was the first step in Britney's downward spiral. A character like that is no better of a choice for her, than any of these lother losers she's chosen.

Hey Jillness, contrary to what other sites are saying, if you actually read the quote in context, it's clearly referring to Britney, not Cameron. Actually, when I first saw elsewhere that the quote was supposedly about Cameron, I thought his referring to their recent long-term relationship as a "thing" was pretty callous, but it makes more sense in reference to his time with Britney, right? Thanks for the catch, though, it's always good to be kept on our toes. Eye-wink

About the pop star comment. He has actually addressed this issue in past interviews and has been able to articulate his point much better than he has done here.

Essentially what he's saying here is that when he set out to make Justified he wanted to something that was far left from the last N Sync album. He wanted to and believed he did make an R&B album. But when it wasn't received as such and when he found he couldn't escape the pop association he was understandably upset.

So when he set out to make FS/LS he wanted it to be a complete departure from Justified, he essentially embraced the pop star title and decided that being pop doesn't mean being bubble gum. It means being R&B, dance, funk, hip-hop et al and you'll find that the new album is peppered with all these musical influences.
So he's not really b*tching about being a pop star, he's accepted it and found that being a pop act means you can do just about anything, you don't have to restrict yourself to any one genre.

I actually for once like what he has to say here- it sounds like he's being real. And I was NEVER a fan of the boy bands OR his kind of music.

As far as the whole Britney & tabloids thing, I feel bad for BOTH of them about it. (Will they get back together? Are they talking? Does he still love her?) Couldn't have helped his relationship with Cameron.

As far as the Grammys thing, I am assuming he didn't make it up out of thin air. One hopes other people are saying the same thing- he doesn't seem like someone with a crazy stupid ego (or have you not seen him on SNL as a dancing & singing soup can- http://geobay.com/d7829e )

It really disappoints me, seeing this interview. he's such a good music artist (not to mention dancer) that it makes you want to like him and drool over him, but his personality seems to be a turn off. he makes it hard to see the good.. and we all wanna love you JT but come on.. cry me a river.. nobody feels sorry for you about the grammy thing, lol. or the fact you won pop artist instead of r&b artist of the year.

LOL, of COURSE the Grammys used you for ratings. He's a business, he brings in $ and ratings. This shouldn't be a surprise. Yeah, I'm sure he worked hard to get where he is. But that doesn't mean that he gets to sh*t on everyone now.

Justin is singed because of Robin Thicke's acceptance into the "blue-eyed soul" hall of fame (with the likes of Teena Marie, Hall & Oats, & Jon B.). Which makes no sense seeing as he's ten times a famous than Thicke and sells more records, but I guess he's never satisfied. I think JT's an ass--like Usher--but I still love his music. I agree that he just doesn't cut it anymore in terms of looks, but he still gets my f-em pass. *GGG*

You know, I agree that he shouldn't bite the hand that feeds him but I can appreciate the honesty of his answers. I still like him and his music. I think that it is true when people decide to be public figures (they aren't just singers/actors anymore) that this is what they should expect (interviewers who ask the same questions, tabloids, paparazzi, etc) but at the same time, it must get tired. I dunno, I guess I am able to see both sides...
