Katherine Bows Out of the Emmy Running — Gracious or Arrogant?

Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley grabbed lunch in LA yesterday, but it was the Emmys that had everyone talking. We mentioned that Katherine pulled her name out of the Emmy running when she said, "I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials." Sounds a little like she's scorning her own writers' material, but maybe she just felt undeserving. What do you think of her move — gracious or arrogant?

Oh Katherine, don't wear white pants ever again!! Anyway, she is graciously arrogant and I'm glad I won't have to see her in the awards.

It would be considered gracious if she simply bowed out. But to make THAT statement, it's definitely arrogant. When will she learn to keep her mouth shut?

I have to second that Rosa, it's neither gracious nor arrogant really, but it's a damn good way to let the Grey's people know she's not a happy camper! And good for her, and like she says, it makes room for someone more deserving.

    Cute bag.
    Bad pants.
She should have said it in a way that wasn't INSULTING to her writers. Jerky, if you ask me.

Ok, I am usually a Katherine Heigl fan, but that statement was ridiculous. It sounded like she was just assuming that she would win because of who she is and not what she actually did so wanted to give other people a chance? Ugh, I think I may have just jumped off her bandwagon.

Who is she to decide who does and doesn't deserve an Emmy? It certainly comes off as arrogant because she's implying that the writers did a crappy job and didn't live up to her HIGH standards.

I think she is really foolish because aside from the fact that she is basically saying the writers suck she is also questioning the academy! She would be very lucky to receive another nomination in the future IMO.

I really don't know. I was personally shocked that she won last year. I think I was even shocked she was NOMINATED.

I don't think the only answer to this is just "gracious" or "arrogant." But I think it is supremely unclassy.

completely and utterly arrogant. she blames the writers and creators of the show for not providing her with good enough material? please. someone needs to give this girl a reality check. i used to love her, ever since roswell, but now i can't stand her and her ego.

She would have been nominated, pretty obvious.

She keeps crapping on the people and things that helped to where she is. Is there anyone in Hollywood who can give her a smackdown already? Please?

I think she tries to be gracious and it comes out totally wrong. The girl has found herself in these situations before and I think maybe she needs to learn that silence is sometimes the best way. Bow out if you feel the need, but shush up after. It wasn't the act that has us going, it's her non-stop twittering after the fact.

When she stood up for TR, we all cheered her on. But then she kept going ... and kept going ... and kept going ... we got it already, let it go.

I think she's just very young and will learn that sometimes not saying anything is more powerful (and much more classy) then saying anything.

Isn't she trying to get out of her contract? Outwardly ragging on her show might help that effort.

Not only does she sound arrogant it's just plain rude.

She should have went balls out and said "The writers are terrible I mean they REALLY suck. My character definitely did not have enough screen time. SO I am going to drop out because I would have won anyway and I dont want the writers to think it was because of anything they did"

diva, i want to agree with you - but she's just a year shy of me and i know how to act (even with someone not writing the lines for me.)

she's not just into her twenties, nor is she new to the scene.

as a side note, the LA times says that she didn't say anything until she was asked. it's not like she put up a billboard with her quote.

also, i find this story from the LA Times piece amusing:
Initially, when we spotted Heigl missing from the ballot, I wondered if she had just forgotten to submit her name for consideration. That happens quite often, but few stars admit it. One who did so, famously, was Tim Allen ("Home Improvement"), who staged an elaborate stunt back in the 1990s after confessing that he forgot to submit his nomination the previous year. The next year he had his paperwork delivered to the TV academy headquarters in North Hollywood by the University of Southern California marching band.

I say totally gracious. She's not saying she WILL win, just that she doesn't deserve to be in the running. I wish some Oscar-nominated actors would do that sometimes.

Really, there would have been a HUGE difference had she said,

"I did not feel that MY WORK this season warranted an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention."

But she said she was not GIVEN the material for Emmy worthy work. I take that as an insult to the writers.

This statement is clearly her way to let everyone know (again) she's not happy on Grey's Anatomy and she would rather be making movies instead (she's said that before). I don't think it's even about the Emmys, because you'd have to be really arrogant and self absorbed to assume you'd beat the competition just by showing up. It's a stunt, another one, to get people talking about her and it's working. I actually don't dislike her at all, but I don't get how a woman this beautiful feels the need to pull these stunts to get attention. All of this whining about Grey's Anatomy is getting really old, at least be a little grateful ...

I really don't like this biya. She continually trashes the people who helped her get to where she is (i.e. Judd Apatow). She should be so thankful that she's even on G.A....before that she was just "that girl who was on Roswell".

I agree with Woop, and wanted to add that she's not the Emmy Integrity Police - they can probably maintain their integrity all by themselves, thank you very much.

I actually don't think it was arrogant.

Sure, she's done some arrogant stuff in the past, but I feel like she's not saying "oh, i'm going to win it for sure," rather she wants to be in the position where if she did win it, she wants to feel like she deserved it. I think that is gracious.

I still don't know why she's famous, and why we care what she thinks. while i don't know her true motives, she certainly comes across as arrogant and rude to her writers in that statement. this is the show that made you famous, don't bite the hand that feeds you..

This is also kind of a slap in the face of the people who selected her. I know she is not happy at the show (though I don't know the story) but this is more than that, I think she should have handled it differently.
