my stepmom bought cigarrettes for her son (with his money) after he told her that he smoked. she felt that if she got him cigarrettes he'd be less likely to go back to being a stoner. it didn't work. he does a lot of coke now. (oops) why would you encourage such a filthy, unhealthy habit?

Wow... She needs to meet my mom. She caught my little brother smoking, and she made him smoke unfiltered ciggs until he got sick. He hasn't touched one since, and the smell of smoke still makes him feel sick to his stomach. lol

i knew some1 highschool and the whole family smoked and the mom didnt even care!! the whole family used to smoke like the 17yr old daughter & 16 yr old son included. Shes trying to be cool but really "dont preach wat u dont practice" kinda thing. it is hollywood and it is messed up!

I started smoking when I was 14, My mom didn't know it till I was 15 or 16 And she didn't like it at all, She said that is not ok and I will have cancer in the future if I don't quit, I never smoke in from of her,never never, She is a very healthy person so I feel that is unpolite to smoke in front of her I guess Melanie is trying to be what is calls from teens a "COOL MOM"...even if is not true..!!!

I don't think it's as bad as everyone's making it out to be. I smoke and have done since I was about 15 and my mum didn't like it but she knew she couldn't stop me. She said she'd rather I did it in front of her than behind her back and gave me an ashtray for my room. Some of you are reacting like she is injecting her with heroin or something. And the girl is 17, not 12. What makes me angry is when I see obese kids about 6 years old with their mothers/fathers shoving junk food down their throats.

my mom told me after her mother died of lung cancer that if i started she would break my fingers. thats the first time i quit, at 18. my dad always knew i smoked, but he had in college as well, so he never ratted me out. he did however buy me nicotine patches for hanukkah. i quit 2 years 2 weeks ago... sometimes you just gotta figure it out on your own, ya know?

i'm a social smoker (last cig i had was nearly two months ago) + i wouldn't want my kid to smoke if she was underage. but if she turned 18 + wanted to, well, what can i do? if i'm still smoking at that point (seriously doubt it), then i can't really tell her not to. the only thing that bothers me about this is the age. we all have vices-- some of us smoke, some of us drink, some of us live at burger king. i think parents who let their kids eat all kinds of crap are just as irresponsible, if not moreso, than dingy melanie. i've known parents who let their kids literally eat sticks of butter-- wtf is that? (em knows what i'm talking about here.) one of the highest killers in this country is cholesterol. speaking of class, i think picking on kids is kind of weak. how does smoking make her a "trashy hoe" (sic)? cigarettes lead to promiscuity? huh?
