The Bolero That Launched A Thousand Worst Dressed Lists

As Jennifer Hudson stepped onto the red carpet this Sunday, the world seemed to let out a collective Whaaaa? as they laid eyes on the silver bolero that would soon go down in Oscar fashion infamy. Thankfully, didn't make it on stage for her acceptance speech, but it seemed to be on the top of everyone's Worsts lists. Turns out, J-Hud herself might not have been too keen on the accessory, but her stylist for the evening, Vogue Celebrity Editor Andre Leon Talley insisted that she wear the thing. Scandal. Here's more:

"Jennifer was kind of sponsored by Talley and Vogue," said one fashionista. "Andre insisted she wear that hideous Oscar de la Renta dress with the awful, awful gold python bolero.

"Jennifer really didn't want to, and so [noted stylist] Jessica Paster got her a beautiful gold Roberto Cavalli custom-made. But when Andre found out, he went ballistic. Moments before she left for the show, there was a power struggle and Jennifer ended up putting his outfit on."

Awww, well it wasn't so bad. Plus, in a couple of months, her performance will be way more memorable than her jacket, right? Right?

For more of Jennifer getting the heck out of LA (wonder where she packed her Oscar) just read more

UGH, that dress was absolutely HORRIBLE! The bolero was the WORST part but the dress was also too casual for the Oscars. It had POCKETS for goodness sakes WHAT WAS SHE THINKING???

Regardless of who "sponsors" you, you should not have to wear something you're not comfortable with... she should have just said no. I mean, she's was an Oscar nominee at that point, it's not like she needed to beg people to dress her!! I feel bad for her though, maybe it was because she was new at the whole awards show thing? She will get it right in the future (which I'm sure she has as she was fabulous in Dreamgirls).

I feel HORRIBLE for her! She seems like such a sweetheart. I can understand how in such a high pressure environment, that the editor of Vogue could easily make you doubt your own judgement.

I probally would have ended up wearing the horrible thing as well , with all those people in your ear telling you what to do, what to wear, etc, its actually probally really stressful at that moment.

    I knew it!!!!

If I was new to the business, I would certainly feel out of place telling an editor at Vogue that I thought the outfit he put together was hideous. I think it would be natural to second guess yourself if you disagree with someone who earns a living by having an amazing eye for fashion.

Andre Leon Talleywhacker is a jerk for forcing her to wear something she wasn't comfortable in. I'm curious as to how she was 'sponsored' by Talley & Vogue.

This is the reason women HAVE to be Diva's.

Do you think Mariah, Jennifer Lopez, or Whitney Houston would have been TOLD to wear a dress they did not like? sponsorship or not??????? NO

The manipulated the poor girl into wearing the dress and ruining her memory of her big triumph over Beyonce...I mean Oscar moment.

She should have kept it real and listen to her girlfriends not some Queen Editor who is VERY at large at Vogue.

Lesson learned Miss Hudson....now the Diva will out because she will not want to be ridiculed like this again.

I agree JK Boogie. I feel really bad for her. Oh well, at least she has her wonderful performance and memorable oscar win (accepted without the silver bolero).

The jacket definitely pushed cutting edge. I was really surprised when I first saw it.

But, I think it was kind of fun! It's too bad, though, if Jen was unhappy with her outfit. It was HER night, for sure!!!

I think she should celebrate all the great things that are happening now and forget about any comments on her wardrobe.

Yeah, she was talking about it on the "Today" show today-- Matt Lauer asked her if she had any "do over" moments and she said what she was wearing. She made a point of saying that THE DRESS was gorgeous. But never mentioned the bolero and never said if she thought SHE looked gorgeous IN the dress. So read between the lines!

Why does it have to be "triumph over Beyonce"? Beyonce has nothing to do with this, so leave her alone.

I don't care about what she wore to the Oscars. I just hope she's not just 2007's It Girl, and that she focuses on her career. And I agree, JK, shades indoors? Very tacky.

Perhaps it was a package deal: The cover of Vogue, in exchange for allowing Talley to style her. If the outfit was a hit, Vogue/Talley would get all the accolades. Sad

    Um, no.

Anyway, the dress was fine, the bolero sucked moose turds.

Now Vogue and Talley get all the credit for being on the worst dressed lists. In her place as a newcomer, most people wouldn't have the confidence to tell a Vogue editor they were wrong.

The color and cut were flattering once she lost the jacket. It wasn't a total trainwreck.

And pockets aren't forbidden in formal wear. Lots of gowns have small pockets hidden to tuck away a key or lip gloss and it's quite handy. Those were just so big and obvious, and it looked bad because she walked around with her hands stuck in them, probably because she felt self-concious.

I don't understand why she just accepted the change without a peep! Surely she knew the other dress was better..... at least it didn't came with a metalic bolero!

I think that i wouldn't feel too comfortable standing up to right hand vogue fellow after getting the cover...and while i'm not one for diva behavior, i'd probably wear sunglasses if i had to deal with photog flashes everywhere i went...

I'm surprised that Andre would want her to wear that in the first place. Strange.
