Is Heidi a Feminist Hero?

Heidi and Spencer seized a golden opportunity for another ridiculous photoshoot while having some Easter fun with Spencer's niece in LA yesterday. Despite the promos we've seen for the new season of The Hills, it's clear that these two are still together. Even so, things were rocky at the end of the last season after Heidi laid down the law with Spencer and they broke off their engagement. Today the New York Times ran an article praising Heidi for standing up to her controlling boyfriend, and even called her "a kind of feminist hero." So tell us — do you agree that Heidi is a feminist hero?

Heidi a "feminist hero"? That's hilarious. Assuming that Heidi even knows the relevance of feminism is giving that girl way too much credit. I'd feel more comfortable with characterizing her as a capitalist hero or even an opportunist hero. I can't give her much more.

I will vote "other" as in the writer of that article and anybody who answers yes has to be something OTHER than sober.

i don't see how anyone could say that heidi is a feminist hero - like lauren said - she's brainwashed and does whatever spencer wants. he's cheated on her and she goes back to him....he's not respectful and she goes back. i think that it takes the femenist movement down a few notches

There should've been an opinion that said: 'Lol - the fact that she was called a feminist hero is a joke'. I definitely would've picked that one.

The NYT seems to keep sinking lower and lower. But I didn't think they'd sink this low.

Yeah I'm confused--what is feminist about Heidi? She does not have a life of her own, friends of her own, etc. She spends every moment with her boyfriend and has made of a joke of herself! I don't get this OR the US Weekly article either!! WTF!

Seriously, you sort of have to read the article in its entirety to understand what the NYT is getting at. They're talking more about archetypes and less about her character.

They must be talking about a different Heidi, cause Im pretty sure this one doesnt even know what feminism means. Thats like saying Pam Anderson is an inspiration to women with small breast. It just doesnt make any sense...

She's a feminist hero because she has the ability to say no to her jerky boyfriend? Maybe if she dumped his *ss and got a life.

a feminist for standing up to your boyfriend? that sounds a little dated to me. not to mention the fact that she's still with Spencer, completely changed her body with plastic surgery, and seems generally ignorant overall. "feminist" is not the first word that comes to mind when i think of her...

    What's with the photo-ops?

How much do you want to bet that that's not even his niece.

Next thing, they'll fake a family funeral so they can sob and kiss, etc. So gross!

I used to think that she was brainwashed by Spencer, but I'm convinced she knows exactly what she's doing now. She spent all of Season 1 bowing to Lauren's will, Season 2 bowing to Spencer's will... Season 3, she started to stand up for herself. Granted, she's a b*tch, but at least she has a spine now.

That being said, it's funny what passes for feminism these days - a girl that got a boob job and a nose job in what seems like an effort to make herself look more like the Playboy bunnies that her boyfriend tried to cheat on her with.

I think standing up to your deadbeat boyfriend/fiance/clown has more to do with dignity than feminism...and given how short lived that was, not sure you can say she has any of that either.

side note: feminism being defined as a woman standing up to her boyfriend (not talking DV and J-Lo's "Enough" here), makes it sound a bit shallow...I agree with emjean...very outdated.
